About the Undergraduate Internship & Research Outcomes

The Undergraduate Summer Experience Survey is administered annually by the Career & Professional Development Center (CPDC) between April and September. Dashboards are refreshed annually in October or November. The current dashboards include survey-response data for Summer Year 2022 through Summer Year 2026.

To protect respondent confidentiality, the CPDC does not share raw survey data. For questions about the dashboards or survey, contact the CPDC at: career@andrew.cmu.edu

  • Summer Year represents the summer following the students' School Year (e.g., Sophomores in Summer Year 2026 finished their Sophomore year in Spring 2026 and will be Juniors in Fall 2026).
  • Senior students pursuing a 5th year or in a 5-year program are surveyed about their summer experiences after their 4th year.
  • Experiences of Seniors who are graduating are included in the First Destination Outcomes.
  • The survey asks students to identify their primary summer experience from the following options: internship, research (on or off campus), entrepreneurial venture, summer job, freelance/project, drama/music festival, taking classes, or volunteer service.
  • Details from the following experience types are reported in two distinct dashboards. (Use the button at upper right to navigate between them.)
    • Internship Experiences: For the purposes of this dashboard, internships are defined as summer experiences relevant to the student's academic degree. This category includes paid and unpaid employment in a relevant role, entrepreneurial ventures, freelance work, music/drama festivals or workshops, and research and development (R&D) roles at a company (e.g., Research Intern at Thermo Fisher Scientific).
    • Research Experiences: This dashboard focuses on research within a department or lab at an academic institution, medical organization, or national/international government research organization (e.g., National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, UPMC, Boston Children's Hospital).
  • Experiences not included in these dashboards are:
    • Summer Job: Part-time work that students identified as not relevant to their academic degree (e.g., service industry, life guard, summer camp).
    • Taking Classes: Enrollment in summer-term courses at ÓÕ»óÂÜÀò or any other academic institution.
  • All personally identifying information (student name, Andrew ID, etc.) has been removed from the dataset, and information about pay is reported only in aggregate.
  • Students with dual degrees or double majors are counted only in their home College and Department.
  • BXA is an intercollege degree program that combines interdisciplinary academics + Arts. To filter for this program, use the Department filter to select the BXA option(s) of interest: BCA, BEA, BHA, BSA.
  • When the number of reported pay is fewer than five, the Pay chart is hidden. When the number of reported experiences is fewer than two, all charts except Employers and Industries (for Internships) or Organizations and Departments/Labs (for Research) are hidden.
